Introduction

Israel was a people with an enormous privilege: having the blessing of the Creator, the owner of all the earth. However, their disobedience was terrible. At times, they neglected their relationship with God; they loved sin and temporary pleasure more, and never truly understood what it meant to have God's Presence among them.

Because of their contempt for spiritual things, Israel faced terrible literal droughts. The prophet summarizes it this way: "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water." (Jeremiah 2:13).

Today, God's people are redeemed and chosen to have His favor, but we often drag the same evil. We easily fall into unbelief and apathy. Although we may not experience physical famine today like Israel did, deep inside we suffer something much more devastating: a Spiritual Drought.

1. Physical Drought

Drought is the lack of rain, and in a physical sense, it brings the worst consequences for the earth:

  • Dry and cracked land.
  • Dry rivers, lakes, and wells.
  • Withered crops and vegetation.
  • Food shortages and extreme thirst.
  • Wildfires.

In the Old Covenant, drought was a severe warning from God to a disobedient nation: "I will break your proud stubbornness and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze. Your strength will be spent in vain, because your soil will not yield its crops" (Leviticus 26:19-20).

2. Spiritual Drought (Jeremiah 14)

Jeremiah 14 presents exactly what Israel would experience due to the deterioration of their relationship with God and the loss of reverence for what is Holy. This passage describes a people submerged in a deep crisis who, sadly, were not reacting.

Pastoral note: Spiritual drought is often not just because of blatant sin; sometimes it simply occurs due to neglect or laziness.

Today, the threat to the believer is the deep emptiness and desert regarding God. The heaviness experienced by not being under the divine rain eventually produces spiritual death. Spiritual drought is the condition of a person, family, or church that has lost the freshness of God's presence:

  • Prayer is no longer enjoyed.
  • The Word no longer feeds you.
  • Hunger for God is lost.
  • Sin no longer produces pain or repentance.
  • Worship becomes a simple routine.

As the psalmist expressed: "My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?" (Psalm 42:2).

3. Causes of Spiritual Drought

The causes of this dryness are varied, but we can highlight four main ones:

  1. Unbelief: When we stop believing that God is still enough, we begin to depend on our own strength.
  2. Neglect of Communion: Difficulty committing to the Word and prayer weakens our spirit.
  3. Iniquity and Apostasy: Constant sin separates us from God, the only Source of Living Waters.
  4. Loving the world more: When we stop renewing our minds and allow ourselves to be seduced by temporary pleasures, our spiritual life withers.

4. Consequences of the Drought

The consequences are profound. The greatest evidence is when people who were once full of fire become simply religious, stagnant, and resistant to change. Jeremiah shows us the real impact:

1. Despair (vs 1-6) The severity of the drought caused the people to raise a cry of despair, not worship. The inhabitants walked with covered heads (a symbol of mourning and shame). When the heart dries up by turning away from God, the head ends up covered in shame. Spiritually, this translates into insensitivity, fatigue, anger, and frustration. When God is missing, money cannot buy peace.

2. It affects all areas of life Drought desensitizes the Christian: they drag their feet to go to church, they have no strength to serve, they don't weep in worship, they are unable to pray. They become dry land (Psalm 63:1). Jeremiah shows that drought makes everyone suffer: men, animals, fields. This affects the family; children turn away, marriage dries up, and the heavens become like bronze.

3. Spiritual life becomes religious (vs 11-12) Reaching this state is chaotic. God tells Jeremiah: "Do not pray for the well-being of this people... although they fast, I will not listen to their cry". Their worship is no longer genuine; they offer things out of habit, but without satisfaction. The one who is dry does not flow.

4. Searching for false messages (vs 13-14) Someone in a drought rejects confrontation. They look for voices (false prophets) that tell them "everything is fine," that nothing is wrong, when in reality, they are spiritually dying.

5. How to get out of this state? (vs 19-22)

It is imperative to get out of this state before it is too late. If God chose you, it is because He loves you. To return to the rain of the Spirit you need to:

  • Acknowledge: Admit the drought (Jeremiah said: "We acknowledge our wickedness").
  • Humiliation: Bow down and surrender pride.
  • Return to the Source: Understand that only God is the source of life (Jeremiah 14:22). As Isaiah 41:18 promises: "I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water".

Conclusion

The good news is that God does not leave the dry man without hope. He who in the Old Testament was the Source of living water, revealed Himself fully in Jesus Christ. He declared: "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink" (John 7:37).

Today the Lord is still looking for men and women who will leave the broken cisterns of sin to return to the Source that never runs dry. When God's presence returns, life returns; when the rain of the Spirit returns, fruit returns; and when Christ once again occupies the center of the heart, the drought ends and true revival begins.
