Bible Reading

"Psalm 92:10 — 'But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil.'"

🌱 Introduction

Eastern culture is very rich in customs of hospitality and personal care, many of which are reflected in biblical literature. The writers spoke of their own experiences and emotions, expressing how God works in caring for the souls of those who seek Him.

Not everyone can understand this rich metaphorical way of speaking, like the psalmist did; people sink into bitterness and depression, but worshipers understand when the text says "you will exalt my horn like that of a wild ox" and "I will be anointed with fresh oil". Because being a Christian isn't just about going to church and that's it, it's about living faith with passion and feeling what others cannot.

Psalm 92:10 — "But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil."

1️⃣ Oil in the Biblical East

It was very common to use olive oil especially, being the best oil in the world for digestion and for multiple purposes:

  • As food: The base of Eastern gastronomy
  • As cosmetic: Softened and protected the skin from the sun
  • As medicine: Recognized healing properties
  • As fuel: For lamps and lanterns
  • In religious rituals: To consecrate and sanctify

This oil symbolized the idea of divine presence, purity, and joy in every home. It went from being something everyday to something sacred.

2️⃣ A Special Anointing Oil

The anointing oil was so called by God, as it was special for consecrating and sanctifying those who were going to serve Him:

Exodus 30:22-25 — "Moreover the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 'Also take for yourself quality spices—five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon... five hundred of cassia... and a hin of olive oil. And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer.'"

The Hebrew word שֶׁמֶן (shemen) has multiple meanings:

  • Oil: The physical substance
  • Ointment: Perfumed oil for special use
  • Fat: Reserve of energy and strength
  • Perfume: Pleasant fragrance
  • Fertility: Sign of abundance

In 2 Kings 4:2-5, the widow had only a jar of oil in her house, and that oil saved her from losing her sons. Oil represented divine provision in the midst of scarcity.

3️⃣ The Metaphor of the Wild Ox and the Oil

David understood he had his own strength, but with God the strength was greater. The wild ox was a strong, almost invincible animal. What does the wild ox have to do with oil?

First revelation: The wild ox has fat in its hump that gives it energy reserves to run, fight, or charge. When attacked, that fat made it difficult to capture.

Second revelation: The horn of the wild ox was the vessel used to pour the oil and anoint kings, the chosen ones, the special ones.

"I shall be anointed with fresh oil" — You are not just anyone. Here are the called, the chosen, the special people who need fresh oil every day. The anointing is what makes a true worshiper different from a religious person.

4️⃣ What is Fresh Oil?

This symbolism speaks of an oil that had to be renewed every day:

Psalm 23:5 — "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over."

In Hebrew, fresh oil is related to שֶׁמֶן יִצְהָר (shemen yitzhar):

  • Freshly pressed oil — Not stored, not old
  • From ripe olives — At their peak
  • Pure, unmixed — Without contamination
  • Of the best quality — First press

For Israel, fresh oil was a sign of a good harvest, divine blessing, and covenant prosperity:

Deuteronomy 7:13 — "And He will love you and bless you and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb... your new wine and your oil."

5️⃣ The Custom of Anointing the Visitor

Luke 7:44-46 — "Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, 'Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet... You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.'"

It was a basic custom of hospitality that when a visitor arrived at the house, the host would wash their feet, give them clean clothes, and anoint their head with fragrant oil. That anointing was a sign of honor, joy, and protection. Rejecting it was a grave offense. Jesus used this to correct Simon.

6️⃣ The Church Needs Fresh Oil

"You anoint my head with fresh oil" — The head is where your thoughts, decisions, actions, and will are. You need the Spirit to think in the Spirit.

  • Daily renewal, daily communion: No old oils
  • The house of God is a horn used to anoint, but if your renewal is stagnant, you don't leave with strength
  • The cellphone is a hindrance — chatting, talking — how can you leave with renewal and strength?

7️⃣ The Example of Esther: Preparation Process with Oil

Esther 2:12-13 — "Each young woman's turn came to go in to King Ahasuerus after she had completed twelve months' preparation, according to the regulations for the women, for thus were the days of their preparation apportioned: six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with perfumes and preparations for beautifying women."

Myrrh oil was used to deeply cleanse, soften, perfume the skin, and strengthen the body. The prolonged use (a whole year) indicates that it wasn't a symbolic one-time event, but a complete process of transformation.

This symbolism speaks of what the church should be doing to present itself to its King: immersing itself in fresh oil for the encounter with Christ.

🙏 Prayer of the Day

Heavenly Father, today I ask You for fresh oil. Renew my thoughts, my strength, my passion for You. I don't want to live with old, rancid oil. I want the freshness of Your Spirit every morning. Anoint my head, give me strength like that of a wild ox, and prepare me as Esther was prepared to stand before You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

💪 Concrete Action

  1. Examine: Does your spiritual life have fresh oil, or is it dry and stagnant?
  2. Renew: Seek God today without distractions — no cellphone, no excuses
  3. Immerse: Like Esther, enter into a process of daily purification with the Word and prayer
  4. Declare: "Today I receive fresh oil from the Holy Spirit upon my head, my thoughts, and my decisions"

Prayer of the day

"Heavenly Father, today I ask You for fresh oil. Renew my thoughts, my strength, my passion for You. I don't want to live with old, rancid oil. I want the freshness of Your Spirit every morning. Anoint my head, give me strength like that of a wild ox, and prepare me as Esther was prepared to stand before You. In Jesus' name, Amen."
