🏗️ What Are You Building Your Life On?
Bible Reading
"1 Corinthians 3:10 — 'By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care.' Matthew 7:24-25 — 'Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.'"
🌱 Introduction
When you're looking to buy a house, what is the first thing you look at? Most of us, if not all, look at what is visible: the structure, the floors, the architecture. But no one is really interested in knowing about its foundation, what it was built on, what its base is. It's simply assumed that it was well built.
Humanity always looks at the beauty of the architecture, the exterior. But no one is interested in what it was made on: principles, foundations, values. The Word reveals to us what we are building on, what our bases are. It's useless to have a great appearance if the foundation is weak. It's useless to appear to be a Christian if your foundation is shaky.
1️⃣ The Ground is Important
Matthew 7:24-27 — "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand."
Jesus presents two types of ground:
- 🏖️ Sand: Building on sand is easier, it doesn't require effort or sacrifice. But it's superficial and shifting.
- 🪨 Rock: Building on solid rock requires greater effort, a lot of hard work. But the rock is strong, unmovable, and deep.
The choice of ground depends on the builder. Christ says that if someone hears Him and obeys Him, they are building on solid ground. But the one who does not listen is a fool who will soon fall. A fool is wise in their own eyes, living under their own concepts and interpretations.
2️⃣ The Foundation is Fundamental
1 Corinthians 3:10 (NIV) — "By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care."
What is the foundation? In Hebrew it is יָסַד [yasad]: to found, to lay the foundation. In Greek θεμέλιον (themelion): foundation or the support of the structure.
📖 Anecdote from the Mexico earthquake: During the massive earthquake, many houses and residential areas collapsed. But in one 5-story condominium, they were the only ones that didn't fall because their foundations were strong: they had a deep layer of stone and gravel. The building only shook, but it didn't collapse.
Foundations don't sell; architecture sells. The exterior is seen, but the depth is not. There are superficial lives, lacking a good foundation, interested only in money.
- 💑 For the singles: Don't be carried away only by what you see on the outside. Find out what principles that person has, what their foundations are, what their ideal home looks like, whether they like children or just love money.
- 🏠 The foundation of a successful home must be built on life principles: love, respect, integrity. Things you only learn from the Lord.
3️⃣ What Are You Building Your Life On?
The key to a building that doesn't collapse lies in its base. If you are building your life with a solid and strong foundation, it has no reason to fall. If it is based on Jesus, who is the Rock, it has no reason to fail.
Hebrews 5:11-14 — "We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!"
Milk is for babies. Paul says there are mature adults feeding on milk. There are Christians who have been in the gospel for years, but their structural life is based on hay, stubble, and trash. They look architecturally beautiful, but they are prone to fall.
A life cannot have spiritual success if it feeds on trash:
- ❌ Pornography, dirty movies
- ❌ Filthy conversations
- ❌ Corrupting friendships (1 Corinthians 15:33: "Bad company corrupts good character")
🪙 When Money is Your Beauty
Money can make you look elegant, handsome, beautiful, but deep down it is empty and fragile. One shake and it falls. Everything revolves around winning, accumulating, and protecting. Peace depends on the bank account. Purpose is lost when money fails. "Whoever loves money never has enough" (Ecclesiastes 5:10).
😤 When Pride is Your Structure
Building on: "I can do it alone", "I don't need anyone", "I'm always right" is foolishness. Result: Broken relationships, loneliness, more painful falls. "Pride goes before destruction" (Proverbs 16:18).
😨 When Fear is Your Structure
Many build their lives so as not to lose, not to fail, not to suffer. Fear doesn't protect; it paralyzes. "Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe" (Proverbs 29:25).
🔥 Pleasure and Sin
When you build only to live, feel, satisfy impulses, escape pain... Consequence: Guilt, slavery, a deeper emptiness.
Romans 6:16 — "Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?"
📿 Building Religiously Without Relationship
Rules, rituals, spiritual appearance... but without heart transformation. "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me" (Matthew 15:8).
🏖️ Building on Sand (According to Jesus)
"But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand." (Matthew 7:26)
Sand can be anything other than Christ. When someone has so many plans and purposes that become unattainable, they live their life mediocrely, frustrated, downcast, because they didn't build on God but on illusions. Their building is only half-finished.
Luke 14:28-30 — "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, 'This person began to build and wasn't able to finish.'"
🏁 Conclusion: The "Tepetate" Ground
Mexicans call a type of soil "Tepetate"; it looks as hard as a rock but it's false. Water and roots don't penetrate this ground. A man who was building dug down, and upon finding this soil said, "I don't need to dig any deeper." He built on that ground. One day a strong storm hit, and the water didn't soak in; instead, it caused the house to slide, until it cracked and finally collapsed.
Every life is built, but:
- ❌ Not every foundation holds up
- ❌ Not every structure remains
📖 1 Corinthians 3:11 — "For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ."
🙏 Prayer of the Day
💪 Concrete Action
This week, examine your foundation:
- 📝 Identify: What are you building on? (Money, pride, pleasure, fear, religiosity, or Christ)
- 🪨 Change the ground: If you discover sand, start digging deeper until you hit the Rock
- 📖 Feed yourself well: Leave the spiritual "milk" and seek solid food in the Word
- 🏗️ Build with care: "But each one should build with care" (1 Corinthians 3:10)
Prayer of the day
"Lord Jesus, I recognize that I have been building on sand, on things that don't last. Today I decide to build my life on You, the solid Rock. Remove from me every false foundation: money, pride, fear, empty pleasure. Teach me to feed on solid food, not on spiritual milk. May my life be a firm house that withstands every storm. Amen."
