Introduction

A certain preacher said: “it didn't matter if the message was long or short, the important thing is that it was complete.” There are very short phrases in the Bible, but they have a complete reaction and acceptance.

The character of God is that of a serious person, who does not change, he says, who does not mutate, what God says he will do he does, and when he makes a call he expects only one response.

Man is fickle and uncertain, words and promises are carried away by the wind, when he receives a word from God he questions it, he wants other options, or his response is “let me think about it” “I'll see” “give me some time to respond”

But God is simply not about options, he is about an option, you give an answer or you reject it, that's all it is.

1) Abraham: an example response.

to. God made a call to Abraham, an offer and a single response

  • Leave your land
  • Be a pilgrim
  • Obey me and I will bless you
  • And Abraham went out (there was no maybe, or what if this or if that)

b. God told him you are mine

  • Gen 15:6-7: Abram trusted in God's promise, and that is why God accepted him and said to him: I am your God, and you are mine because you trust in me. I brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land.
  • Whoever trusts in God belongs to him, in these words there is an exclusivity; I will bless you, but you belong to me. You are mine

2) Levi: An example of response to Jesus' call

In the Bible every man called by God was improbable, according to his character because no man was perfect, all are called by the grace of God; just as we were.

to. Who was Levi: Levi was a publican (tax collector), despised by his people due to his collaboration with the Roman Empire. The publicans were hated by the people because they were swindlers.

  • They were held in the lowest esteem, placed in the same category as harlots, and Jesus was even accused of eating and being friends with them. Their wealth led them to a sinful life, and the Bible frequently mentions them along with “sinners.”
  • They could not enter the synagogues, nor even pray, they were considered traitors

b. The call of Jesus:

  • Jesus sees Levi sitting on the tax bench and tells him directly: "Follow me."
  • Levi responds immediately, leaving everything behind to follow Jesus. He did not ask why or why, but rather his only option was to follow the teacher.
  • Instantly he left everything, Mateo got up, left everything he had, and followed him. There was NO plan B, there was no option
  • Today many do not understand this call to follow Jesus, to serve him, there are excuses, there are other priorities. They are sinners, but they don't believe they need the Lord
  • Some do as (Luke 9:59 Then Jesus said to another, "Follow me!" But he answered, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." 60 Jesus said to him, "The important thing is that you go right now to announce the good news of the kingdom of God. Let the dead bury their dead!" say goodbye to my family. 62 Jesus said to him: “You cannot belong to the kingdom of God and do the same thing that a bad peasant does.

3) The meaning of the call "Follow me"

  • A message of transformation: Jesus is telling Levi that his place and his life must change. "Follow me" is a call to get up and embark on a new route.
  • Following in Jesus' footsteps: It involves learning from Jesus, following his example and walking behind Him.
  • An imperative call: The word "Follow me" is not a suggestion, it is an order loaded with authority. It's not an option, it's the only option.
  • Many will lose salvation because their lives are more entangled in the business of this world than in announcing the kingdom of God.

to. Levi's (Matthew) Response

  • Levi leaves everything immediately: The act of getting up and following Jesus shows a determined and prompt response.
  • Matthew as an apostle: After his conversion, Matthew accompanied Jesus, witnessed His death, resurrection and ascension, and became the writer of the Gospel of Matthew.
  • Abraham, Mateo and others left everything to follow in the footsteps of the master. That Follow Me became an order, in God's plans there are not two paths, only one, either you follow him and leave everything or you stay behind (Jn 6:66 66From then on many of his disciples turned back, and no longer walked with him. 67Then Jesus said to the twelve: Do you also want to go? 68Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. 69And we have believed and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God)

b. The passion for Christ

  • The call of Jesus transformed Levi/Matthew, and that passion to follow the Lord led him to preach even in remote places like Ethiopia and Persia.
  • The sacrifice to follow Christ: Matthew, like many others, was willing to suffer for Christ, and was finally martyred for his faith.
  • Is there passion to follow the Lord? Or like some, is there an excuse? The rich young man was invited to follow the Lord, but wealth did not leave him.
  • There is no option b or c, or any other way (Luke 22:54 And they seized him, took him, and led him to the house of the high priest. And Peter followed him at a distance) Peter, after Christ was taken, went away to the point of going astray.
  • This way of moving away from God, of following him along the shores, of thinking that I have to leave to follow him, leads to derailment, to cooling, to not having passion for him.
  • Today many renounce the Lord and leave everything, they give up their responsibilities, “I don't have time” “I'm very busy” I will follow it as plan d. For God there are no plans, only your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9 NLT God said: "I do not think how you think nor act as you act. My thoughts and my actions are far above what you think and do: they are higher than the heavens! I swear to you that it is so")

4) Reflection on the call "Follow Me" today

  • The call of Jesus continues to resonate today: Are you willing to follow Christ?
  • Our love for Jesus must be so great that we are willing to follow him, overcoming any obstacle.

to. Personal involvement

  • Limited time: Reflection on the brevity of life (average lifespan of 77 years). The call is urgent: we must follow the Lord now.
  • Following the Lord means not looking back, leaving what distances us from Him and following Him with determination.

Conclusion

  • Call to Action: Is anyone here willing to answer the call to "Follow Me"?
