What you will learn: Decoding Biblical Prophecy
Key Text: Daniel 9:24-27
INTRODUCTION
The prophecy of the 70 Weeks in Daniel 9 is widely considered the backbone of Biblical eschatology (the study of end times). Without understanding this chapter, it is nearly impossible to fully understand the book of Revelation or the Olivet Discourse of Jesus. It is a mathematical and historical masterpiece that proves the divine inspiration of the Bible.
1. WHAT IS A 'WEEK' IN THIS PROPHECY?
(Daniel 9:24) "Seventy 'sevens' are decreed for your people and your holy city..."
- A Week of Years: In Hebrew, the word translated 'week' is shabua, which simply means a unit of seven. Just as a 'dozen' means 12, a shabua means 7. In the context of this prophecy, it refers to a week of years, not days. So, 70 weeks = 70 x 7 = 490 years.
- The Purpose: These 490 years are specifically decreed for Daniel's people (Israel) and his holy city (Jerusalem) to finish transgression, atone for wickedness, and bring in everlasting righteousness.
2. THE TIMELINE: 69 WEEKS FULFILLED
(Daniel 9:25) "Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven 'sevens,' and sixty-two 'sevens.'"
- The Starting Point: The countdown began with the decree of King Artaxerxes to rebuild Jerusalem's walls in 444 B.C. (Nehemiah 2:1-8).
- The Arrival of the Messiah: The prophecy states that from that decree until the coming of the Messiah would be 69 weeks (483 biblical years of 360 days). Astoundingly, calculating 173,880 days from the decree lands exactly on the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey (Palm Sunday)—the exact day He presented Himself as King!
- The Cutting Off: Verse 26 says, "After the sixty-two 'sevens,' the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing." This perfectly predicts the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
3. THE PROPHETIC GAP: THE CHURCH AGE
- Between the 69th week and the 70th week, there is a prophetic pause or 'parenthesis'. This is the Church Age, the dispensation of Grace in which we currently live. The prophetic clock for Israel was paused when they rejected the Messiah, and it will resume when the Church is raptured.
4. THE 70TH WEEK: THE TRIBULATION
(Daniel 9:27) "He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation..."
- The Final 7 Years: The 70th week is a future 7-year period known as the Tribulation.
- The Antichrist: The 'he' in verse 27 is the Antichrist, a global political leader who will emerge and sign a peace treaty with Israel.
- The Abomination of Desolation: In the middle of the 7 years (3.5 years in), he will break the treaty, enter the rebuilt Jewish temple, and demand to be worshiped. This triggers the Great Tribulation, ending with the glorious Second Coming of Jesus Christ to establish His millennial kingdom.
CONCLUSION
The 70 weeks of Daniel prove that the Bible is the Word of God. Jesus fulfilled the first 69 weeks to the exact day. Therefore, we can be absolutely certain that the final 70th week will happen exactly as written.
Application: As believers, we are not looking for the Antichrist; we are looking for Jesus Christ. The Rapture of the Church is the next event on the prophetic calendar. Are you ready?
