A God Who Did Not Spare: The Generosity of the Father

INTRODUCTION

One of the greatest tragedies in the Christian life is having an incorrect image of God the Father. Many view Him as an angry judge, an absent parent, or a stingy boss who reluctantly hands out blessings. But the Apostle Paul paints a completely different picture in the book of Romans. He presents a God of radical, limitless generosity.

1. THE GOD WHO DOES NOT HAGGLE

(Romans 8:32a) "He who did not spare his own Son..."

• The Meaning of 'Spare': The Greek word used here is pheidomai, which means to spare, to haggle, to hold back, or to be stingy. When humans buy something, we try to get the lowest price. We haggle. We spare our resources.
• The Ultimate Price: God looked at your salvation and He didn't haggle. He didn't say, 'I will send an angel' or 'I will give half.' He gave the absolute maximum: His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. God emptied heaven's greatest treasure to purchase you back from sin.

2. THE ORPHAN MENTALITY VS. THE SON MENTALITY

• The Older Brother Syndrome: In the parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15), the older brother gets angry because the father throws a party for the rebel son. He complains: "You never gave me even a young goat to celebrate with my friends."
• The Father's Reply: "My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours."
• Living as Beggars in a Palace: Many Christians live exactly like that older brother. They live in the Father's house, but they have an orphan mentality. They think God is scarce, stingy, and withholding. They beg for scraps when the Father has given them the keys to the kingdom.

3. THE LOGIC OF HEAVEN

(Romans 8:32b) "...how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?"

• The Argument from the Greater to the Lesser: Paul uses a powerful logical argument here. If someone buys you a million-dollar mansion (the greater), are you going to worry that they won't give you the key to the front door (the lesser)?
• Applying the Truth: If God already gave you Jesus—the greatest, most costly gift in the universe—why do you doubt that He will give you the job, the healing, the peace, or the provision you need? The hard part (your salvation) is already done. The rest is freely given along with Him.

CONCLUSION

Your prayers reflect your theology. If you pray with doubt, fear, and begging, you believe in a stingy God. If you pray with bold faith, thanksgiving, and expectation, you know you have a generous Father.

Application: Repent today of any orphan mentality. Stop believing the enemy's lie that God is holding out on you. Rest in the outrageous generosity of the God who did not spare His own Son.
