The 7 Biblical Commandments to Conquer Anger
Why do we get angry so easily? Anger is, at its deepest core, a perceived invasion of our personal rights and expectations. In this exegetical study, we will analyze the 7 commandments to conquer anger according to the Word of God.
1. Repent (Metanoeō)
The text of Matthew 3:2 exhorts us: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." The Greek word μετανοέω (metanoeō) implies a change of life, based on a complete change of attitude and thought regarding sin and righteousness.
Anger is essentially an expression of pride. Proverbs 13:10 tells us: "Where there is strife, there is pride". Anger indicates that you have centered your life around what pleases or displeases you, instead of what pleases God. Repentance restores relationships and helps us yield our expectations, recognizing that trying to live in our own energy only generates frustration.
2. Rejoice in the Midst of Trial
Matthew 5:11-12 declares: "Blessed are you when people insult you... Rejoice and be glad". Your first response to an irritating situation should not be anger, but gratitude (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
Rejoicing is a condition of the Spirit. Discovering why God allowed a difficult situation helps us understand that trials are designed to develop our character (Romans 5:3-5). Remember: anger starts as a small flame; if not eliminated, it becomes rage (a bonfire), and finally becomes malice, a furious forest fire.
3. Go to Your Offenders (Reconciliation)
Matthew 5:24 gives us a clear command: "Leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them".
Seeking forgiveness instead of magnifying the offense is the result of having peace. Fellowship to resolve problems and speak truthfully will free your life from anger. "Without wood a fire goes out" (Proverbs 26:20). Before talking to others about your offenders, go and look for them first.
4. Love Your Enemies (Spiritual Creativity)
Jesus was radical in Luke 6:27-28: "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you".
It is impossible to remain angry with someone you genuinely love. To achieve this, you must give a verbal blessing, do good deeds for their benefit, and pray fervently for them. This imparts divine power and develops strengths in your heart.
5. Be Perfect (Sincerity)
The Lord calls us in Matthew 5:48: "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect".
This perfection is manifested in how we treat others, even those we do not like. Greet everyone with enthusiasm. If you love only those who love you, what credit is that to you? (Luke 6:32). Spiritual maturity (perfection) is evidenced in constant mercy.
6. Honor Your Parents
The commandment of Exodus 20:12 has direct repercussions on our emotional peace: "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long".
The relationship you have with your parents will affect every other relationship in life. Honoring them brings blessing and mental health, while unforgiveness towards them is a common root of chronic anger and generational curses.
7. Go the Second Mile
Matthew 5:41: "If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles".
For a Jew under Roman oppression, this commandment seemed unbearable. However, by walking the first mile, we free ourselves from our imposed responsibility, but by walking the second mile, we find a friend and kill the hatred. The Christian testimony often starts in that second mile of unconditional service.
Conclusion
Conquering anger is not suppressing it; it is transforming it through radical obedience to these 7 commandments. Surrender your expectations to God today, forgive, love, and allow the Holy Spirit to put out the destructive fire of pride in your heart.
