A MAN's TRUE LEGACY IS NOT HIS MONEY… IT'S HIS MARRIAGE
Base Text: Song of Solomon 8:6
"Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame."
INTRODUCTION
It is not every day that 25 years of union are celebrated. Today it is an incalculable treasure, because the definition of marriage, union, and legacy has drastically changed due to the numerous traps of the enemy. A reality has been created that permeates the home, where "covenants" are broken every day through infidelity, pornography, and above all, pride.
The biblical text says that "if one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love, it would be utterly scorned." Today, when couples like Jaime and Mónica celebrate a 25-year milestone, we see that much has been achieved. But let us remember a wise saying: now that the palm tree is very high, the falling coconut is more dangerous.
That is to say, now is when the enemy will most want to steal the treasure you have built, and you must be more vigilant to keep that flame burning. That is your true example and historical legacy for your children and for those of us who know you.
1. A TRUE LEGACY OF A MARK
"Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm!" (Song of Solomon 8:6)
a. A seal is not a tattoo
Many people get "tattoos" of their partner's names, but over time they have to erase them or cover them up. This biblical mark is not superficial; it is something that lasts for eternity.
- It is the indelible memory of the person who has loved you and has stood by you.
- When we celebrate a wedding we say: "To be with you in health or in sickness, in wealth or in poverty." Today we can affirm: the true mark is borne by the name of that person who has stood with you in every difficult situation.
- Couples break up because they don't know how to deal with pressure. Pride breaks the mark, scratches it, and cracks it.
- Your marriage is a legacy leaving a trail that very few can follow, inspiring others to say: "I will make it there, no matter what happens."
b. Marriage is not a contract, it is a Spiritual Seal
- It is a Seal of identity.
- It is a Seal of belonging.
- It is a Seal of love.
In ancient times, a man's seal given to a woman was something completely sacred and legal:
"So Judah asked, 'What pledge should I give you?' 'Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand,' she answered. He gave them to her..." (Genesis 38:18)
Judah tried to play games with his former daughter-in-law (Tamar), but she secured his Seal. Because she had that seal, Judah could not condemn her, as the seal granted her an identity and irrefutable proof. Whoever has A SEAL in marriage has an identity before God and men, something that no one can take away.
2. THE LEGACY IS BUILT UNDER FIRE
"For love is as strong as death... It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame!"
a. Without Fire, no Marriage endures
A marriage does not last if there is no fire and passion. And this does not refer only to the sexual area, but to enthusiasm and passion in all areas of life together.
- It is not a destructive or harmful fire; this is a fire ignited by God to fight together, to conquer, and to reach goals.
- Everything built with love and passion yields excellent results. God powerfully blesses that home.
- Sadly, there are homes where coldness reigns: it is an icy cold that reaches the bones through constant criticism, dishonor, murmuring, and the annoyance of shaming your partner in public or private.
- Love is gradually destroyed when couples stop spending time together. Make time for your partner, that is your identity.
- Keeping the fire alive means highlighting your partner's virtues. The person who should most recognize your achievements and talents is your own spouse.
3. THE LEGACY IS INDESTRUCTIBLE
"Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away!" (Song of Solomon 8:7)
a. Love armors the Home
The author speaks of how truly loving someone armors a home against attacks, seas of problems, and economic failures.
- Because failures will arrive sooner or later, but where there is love, rebuilding happens.
- Illness is a violent sea that threatens to drown family peace. But anyone who believes that by being unfaithful or abandoning ship they will find peace is mistaken: the day you get sick you will die alone, unless the person who loved you with a seal and covenant is right there by your side.
b. Pure Exclusivity (Jealousy as the Grave)
The King James Version adds something striking: "jealousy is cruel as the grave".
- Fleshly jealousy is destructive: If anything withers a marriage quickly, it is a possessive and insecure man or woman; living like that is as terrible as hell itself.
- The zeal for the Exclusivity of the Covenant: From another perspective, the author said that Sheol (the grave) never yields, it is never full. The true legacy demands that the union is not shared, it is pure Exclusivity. My home is exclusive; no outsider can enter to govern or opine, only God. If a third person permeates it, everything falls apart.
CONCLUSION
To all marriages, especially those who have been together for many years like Jaime and Mónica: Now is when you must care for your home the most. Your relationship is a beacon of hope.
Many marriages, after 25 years, have made the fatal decision to separate looking for a "new life" and supposed freedom, but the truth is that in doing so they are telling themselves: "You are not leaving a legacy."
Do not trade the pure gold of a family legacy and a covenant with God for the cheap trinkets the world offers. Money runs out, beauty fades, but a marriage built on the rock is forever.
