ANXIETY AND LOSS OF CONTROL: HOW TO REST IN GOD

Base Text: Genesis 6:12-16

INTRODUCTION

Anxiety has become the epidemic of our generation. We want to control everything: our finances, our children's future, our health, our career. But what happens when the storm hits and you realize that, actually, you never had control of anything?

In the days of Noah, the world was in total chaos. Man had taken the helm of humanity, and the result was corruption and violence. God decides to intervene, not to destroy, but to save a remnant. And for that, He gives Noah instructions to build a very peculiar vessel: an ark without a helm.

1. THE ILLUSION OF CONTROL

"And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth." (Genesis 6:12)

When we try to steer our own lives without God, we always end up in corruption and chaos. We think that if we plan enough, if we work hard enough, we will be able to avoid storms. But the Bible teaches us that the only true security is found in submitting to the sovereignty of God.

The Root of Anxiety

Anxiety is simply the result of trying to carry a weight that we were not designed to carry: the weight of the future. God says: "Give me your future. Let me carry that weight."

2. THE DESIGN OF THE ARK: TOTAL DEPENDENCE

"Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks." (Genesis 6:14-16)

God gives Noah exact measurements. He tells him how to make the rooms, what wood to use, where to put the door and the window. But there is a crucial detail missing from the divine instructions: God never told Noah to build a helm or a sail.

Why an Ark Without a Helm?

Because an ark with a helm invites the captain to try to steer it. God was telling Noah: "Your job is to build the ark and get inside. My job is to steer it through the flood."

When you board God's Ark, you have to let go of the steering wheel. You must surrender your illusion of control.

3. THE STORM AND THE PEACE

When the flood came, the ark floated. It didn't matter how high the waves were, the ark rose above them. Inside, Noah and his family couldn't steer the ship. They couldn't see where they were going. They only had one window, and it was on top, pointing towards heaven.

"Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above..." (Genesis 6:16)

When you are in the midst of the storm, you shouldn't look sideways at the waves that threaten to sink you. You shouldn't look down at the dark waters. You must look up. Your help comes from the Lord.

4. RESTING IN THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD

Are you exhausted from trying to steer your life? Do you feel like the waves of debt, family problems, or illness are going to sink you?

Today God invites you to enter the Ark. Christ is our Ark of Salvation. When you enter Him, you are safe. But you have to be willing to travel without a helm.

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6)

To trust is to let go. To trust is to sleep in the boat while the storm rages, knowing that the Master of the sea is in control.

CONCLUSION

Noah did not know where the ark would land. He did not know how long the journey would last. But he knew the Captain. And that was enough.

Today, hand over the helm of your family to God. Hand over the helm of your finances. Hand over the helm of your health. Rest in His sovereignty. He knows exactly to which mountain He is taking you.

Quick Devotional

"Proverbs 3:5-6 — Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."

The hardest part of faith is not believing that God can do something, but trusting His way and His timing when we don't have control. Noah spent months inside an ark that he couldn't steer, listening to the roar of the flood outside. His only peace was knowing that God had closed the door from the outside and was steering the vessel. What area of your life are you desperately trying to control? Today, God invites you to lift your hands off the helm and rest in His sovereignty.

Prayer

Lord, I confess that I struggle with the desire to control everything. Today I surrender my anxiety to You. I give You the helm of my family, my finances, and my future. I trust that Your plans are good and that You are steering me to safe harbor. Amen.
