The Divine Principle of Order in the Home: Structure, Peace, and Authority
Official Series: Generational Blessing (Part 8 of 9) Central Biblical Text: 1 Corinthians 14:33, 40 | Exodus 18:13-27 | Proverbs 24:3-4 | Genesis 1:1-3 Preacher: Pastor Josué Angarita
HOMILETICAL INTRODUCTION: GOD ORDERS BEFORE FILLING
Opening the first chapter of the Bible, we find an astonishing revelation about the intrinsic nature of our Creator:
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." (Genesis 1:1-2)
In the original Hebrew language, the two words used to describe the state of the earth are Tohu va-Bohu (תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ), which denote chaotic confusion, desolation, and anarchy. Let us note with holy reverence the modus operandi of the Omnipotent God: God did not proceed to fill the earth with animal and human life while disorder prevailed.
- First, He separated the light from the darkness (luminous order).
- Then He separated the waters of the heavens and the waters of the seas (atmospheric and hydrological order).
- He established the boundaries of the dry land (geographical order).
- And only when everything was in its assigned place, God breathed abundance and filled the heavens and the earth with abundant life.
This principle is eternal and immutable: God cannot fill what you are not first willing to order. Many believers pray: "Lord, pour out prosperity and joy in my house!", but their finances are a budgetless chaos, their marital relationships lack boundaries, and their homes are submerged in daily improvisation. Biblical order is the mandatory channel for the river of the Spirit to flow freely.
1. THE EXEGESIS OF 1 CORINTHIANS 14:40: DECENCY AND STRUCTURE
"But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way." (1 Corinthians 14:40)
A. Decently: The beauty of the testimony (Euschemonos)
The adverb translated as "fittingly" or "decently" is in Greek Euschemonos (εὐσχημόνως), composed of eu (good, noble) and schema (form, figure, appearance).
- It literally means to do things with moral beauty, noble dignity, propriety, and honor.
- In the home, decency excludes vulgarity in language, closed-door insults, shameful carelessness, and physical negligence in the presentation of the house. A Christian home should reflect decorum, neatness, and the light of heaven.
B. In order: The discipline of military formation (Taxis)
The Greek word for order is Taxis (τάξις). In the Greco-Roman world, Taxis was a strictly military technical term that designated:
- The perfect formation of the ranks of an invincible army, where every centurion and every soldier knows exactly their combat post, their guard duty, and their rank of authority.
- When a Roman legion broke Taxis and fell into disorder, enemy cavalry annihilated it in minutes.
- In the family: The home where authority roles are reversed—where children boss parents around, where the husband abdicates his priesthood or the wife despises biblical leadership—has broken the divine Taxis and is left defenseless against demonic attacks.
2. JETHRO'S MODEL: STRUCTURING THE HOME (Exodus 18:13-27)
"When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, 'What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?'... 'You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.'" (Exodus 18:14, 18)
A. The danger of collapse due to lack of delegation and method
Moses was the meekest man on earth and devoutly loved God; however, he almost destroyed his leadership and his health due to a lack of organizational order. He spent from dawn to dusk attending to personal disputes of two million people in a kilometer-long line in the desert.
- His father-in-law Jethro, with practical and spiritual wisdom, firmly warned him: "You will only wear yourselves out... you cannot handle it alone" (v. 18).
- How many Christian mothers are exhausted, sick from their nervous system, and depressed because they assume one hundred percent of the household chores on their shoulders while teenage children and the husband watch television! That is not piety; it is a functional disorder that destroys family peace.
B. The establishment of Kingdom structure
Jethro ordered Moses to select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens:
- Delegation with accountability saved Moses' ministry.
- At home, wise parenting distributes functions: children must have responsibilities according to their age. When each member assumes their role, the house ceases to be a field of stress and transforms into an oasis of rest.
3. THE THREE DIMENSIONS OF FAMILY ORDER
To experience the fullness of generational blessing, order must be established in three cardinal areas:
A. Order in Spiritual Priorities
Jesus established the supreme hierarchy in Matthew 6:33: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well".
- If your children's extracurricular activities, weekend soccer games, or social commitments displace gathering together and seeking God, the order of your house is broken and the fruit will be spiritual dryness.
B. Order in Financial Stewardship
Proverbs 27:23 advises: "Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds".
- A home in uncontrolled debt, where more is spent than earned out of vanity and appearances, lives in a permanent atmosphere of anguish and irritability. Financial order—tithing with honor, saving with prudence, and living within real income limits—restores sleep and dignity to the family.
C. Order in Communication and Daily Boundaries
God is a God of times and seasons:
- Regular sleep schedules for children (lack of adequate rest produces irritability and poor school performance).
- Strict boundaries for the use of screens and mobile phones at the table and in the bedrooms.
PRACTICAL AND MINISTERIAL APPLICATION
1. For Fathers and Mothers
- Have a day of purification and material order in your home: Rooms full of useless junk, clothes thrown on the floor, and physical untidiness do not reflect God's glory. Involve your children in a deep cleaning this weekend. Outer order transmits inner peace.
- Design a written monthly budget together: Sit down with your spouse with a notebook in hand; determine what must be paid first (tithes, debts, basic needs) and eliminate superfluous expenses. Where there is financial order, the devil of discord runs out of arguments.
2. For Youth and Children
- Your room reflects the state of your mind: If your bedroom looks like a bombed territory, with dirty dishes under the bed and piled up clothes, your emotional life and thoughts will tend toward chaos. Ordering your physical space is the first step to governing your destiny.
3. For Pastors and Servants of God
- The local church must be a model of heavenly Taxis: punctuality in services, transparent audited finances, and ministers who manage their own families well before aspiring to pastor the flock of God (1 Timothy 3:4-5).
REFLECTION QUESTIONS FOR CONNECTION GROUPS
- Which of the three dimensions of order (spiritual, financial, or domestic) presents the greatest fractures in your home right now?
- In the style of Jethro's advice to Moses, what household responsibilities do you need to start delegating to your children today so they mature and you don't carry everything alone?
- How is the disorder of schedules or screens affecting the communion and peace of your marriage?
MINISTRATION GUIDE AND ALTAR PRAYER
Ask the heads of the household to take the hand of their spouses and children to consecrate the order of the home:
Prayer for Divine Re-ordering in the Home: "Father of peace and wonderful Creator, today we confess before You that You are not a God of disorder but of peace (Shalom). We ask Your forgiveness for every disorder, carelessness, laziness, or anarchy that we have tolerated in our house. Today we cast out from our four walls the spirit of chaos, discord, and debt. We establish the order of Christ (Taxis) in our priorities, in our schedules, in our economy, and in our family relationships. We declare that our children will honor parental authority and that parents will govern with Kingdom wisdom and meekness. We will do everything decently and in order so that Your holy presence dwells forever in our rooms. In the name of Jesus, amen."
