PATH TO TRANSFORMATION: GOD'S REFINERY
Base Text: Isaiah 48:10
"Behold, I have purified you, and not as silver; I have chosen you in a furnace of affliction."
INTRODUCTION
Human beings have a big problem: the flesh rules us, and the flesh is subject to the orders of sin. Corruption comes from birth: "I was formed in iniquity" (Ps 51:5).
God knows this, that is why in the Bible he reveals himself with powerful analogies:
- Potter molding the clay
- Labrador pruning to bear fruit
- Goldsmith refining gold
The process has a divine objective: to bring out edge, beauty and purity. The more stubborn and disobedient we are, the more intense the process will be. God speaks from love, but he also uses pain.
1. GOD SHOWS HIS REFINERY (Isaiah 48:10)
A word used for "repeat" in Deut 6:6 is שָׁנַן (šā∙nǎn): sharpen, grind, inculcate.
Repetition is sharpening. God sharpens, polishes and prepares for action.
God says: "I will refine you like GOLD, not like silver."
- Silver is valuable, but gold is the most appreciated metal.
- Rev 3:18: "Buy from me gold refined in fire..."
2. GOD'S REFINERY
a) Refining is removing impurities
- Gold needs 1064°C, silver 961°C.
- More heat, more time, more patience.
God uses a furnace (the furnace of suffering) to straighten steps, remove rough edges, and transform character.
When we do not move forward, there may be deep impurities that must come to the surface.
b) God does not put into the oven to destroy
- God does not burn what he loves; processes it.
- Cleanse the unclean to form an upright character.
- It is not the end, it is preparation for something bigger.
c) The impurities of Israel (Isaiah 48:4-5)
- Tough and rebellious people
- Idolatry and false worship
- Lips that sing, but lives with gossip, litigation and duplicity
Suffering reveals pride and produces gold.
d) What only God's refinery can do
- The oven does not destroy, it purifies
- What a cult or a song does not achieve, the process achieves
- Job 42:2-6: suffering breaks and corrects
The operation ends when the metal reflects the image of the refiner.
e) Purpose of God
- Remove everything that hinders communion with Him
- Remove obstacles: harmful courtships, distractions, misused technology
- A poorly administered blessing is also an oven
f) In the process, God works like this
- Goldsmith: every blow has a purpose
- Extreme patience
- God never gets tired
g) Allegories
- A dull knife
- An unripe fruit
- A file that sharpens ("you will repeat")
CONCLUSION
God wants you to be transformed to reflect His image: not a quarrelsome man, nor a woman of strife, nor a rebellious son, but people full of love, joy and peace.
The process is hard, but removes pride, anger and arrogance. If there are difficult people in your house, ask God: "Put them in the oven, Lord, do Your work."
Sometimes we pray for nothing to happen, but when God is working we must say: "Thy will be done."
