God and Mental Health: Free from the Prison of Thoughts ⚠️

Base Texts: Isaiah 61:1 – Luke 4:18

INTRODUCTION

Humanity thinks that God doesn't care about what man thinks, what he feels, and how he lives. Some believe that the religious aspect has to do only with rites, ceremonies, or commandments, but this way of seeing God is wrong and diabolical. God does care about His creation; sin brought terrible consequences, from illness to the absence of peace and curses.

But God, knowing that a multitude of condemnations fell upon man, did not abandon him. He pronounced the sentence of His judgment (Genesis 3: banished man from the garden of happiness, to have to suffer), but immediately devised a plan of Salvation for everyone without exception (2 Peter 3:9).

But why doesn't that happen automatically? Why do we see people increasingly sick in their minds? The answer is clear: He gave a gift, but everyone rejected it; He provided the door, and no one wants to enter. The result is death and more death.

1. CHRIST: THE SOLUTION TO ALL THESE PROBLEMS

In Isaiah 61:1-4 and Luke 4:18, non-physical diseases are named, diseases that come from the mind, from minds that dwell in darkness.

  • The Promise of Deliverance: The list includes the brokenhearted, captives, prisoners, those who mourn, the afflicted, and those with a spirit of despair.
  • Seeing this, it is undeniable that God wants to free man, heal him, restore him, and give a 180-degree turn to his life. So that he doesn't have to live anxious, troubled, depressed, chained, with no time, and desperate.
  • The spiritual blindness of man does not allow him to see God's grace. Satan is a manipulative destroyer who knows that sin produces overwhelming burden.

2. WHAT IS GOD'S WILL REGARDING MENTAL HEALTH?

The will of the Lord for every human being is mental integrity and wholeness. God loves His creation. Any condition resulting from psychological disintegration (psychosis, neurosis, hysteria) goes against the loving will of the Lord.

Definition of Mental Health: It is a state of well-being in which a person realizes their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, and work productively.

Some mental illnesses the world suffers today:

  1. Psychosis: Loss of contact with reality, altering thoughts and perceptions.
  2. Neurosis: Chronic negative emotional state, worsened by anxiety, guilt, depression, anger, or envy.
  3. Histeria (Somatization Disorder): Chronic concern over physical symptoms with no identifiable origin (visiting doctors without finding a cure).

3. BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF MENTAL PROBLEMS

  1. Cain (Genesis 4): The first to manifest jealousy, envy, uncontrolled anger, isolation, and hopelessness. He was condemned to wander in absolute loneliness.
  2. Saul: Suffered episodes of melancholy and madness. Experienced intense jealousy toward David leading to erratic behavior (1 Samuel 18:6-11).
  3. David: Suffered emotional problems due to his sin, but balanced the scale by seeking God: "Why, my soul, are you downcast?" (Psalm 42:9-11).
  4. Elijah: After a great victory, he fell into deep depression and a desire to die due to Jezebel's persecution (1 Kings 19:4).
  5. Job: Experienced intense emotional suffering and anguish after losing everything, questioning his life (Job 3:20-24).
  6. Solomon: Expressed hopelessness and existential emptiness, reflecting on the futility of life without God (Ecclesiastes 1:17-18).

4. THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE INTERNET (THE EVIL OF THE 21ST CENTURY)

Social networks are wreaking havoc, skyrocketing depression and anxiety.

Real Story: A young girl named Olivia started hating her body at age 13. Seeking approval, she posted a photo on Facebook, but after getting no "likes", she deleted it. Then, a boy asked for an intimate photo, and wanting to be admired, she sent it. The next day, the whole school mocked her. Olivia wanted to take her own life.

The "Dopamine Generation": Psychiatrist Anna Lembke states that the smartphone is today's hypodermic needle, administering digital dopamine 24/7. Why do Silicon Valley engineers ban cell phones for their kids until age 15? Because they know its destructive power.

Negative Effects:

  • Anxiety and Depression: Constant comparison and zero tolerance for frustration.
  • Technological and Spiritual Control: The Bible reveals in Revelation 13 (The Mark of the Beast) and Revelation 18 a world of global control. Today, man's cognitive capacity is being intentionally diminished so he stops thinking and reasoning.
  • Lack of Sleep and Isolation: Youth awake in the dark, late at night, on TikTok.

5. HOW THE BIBLE ADDRESSES THE PROBLEM

The Bible does not use the clinical term "mental health," but it gives us the exact guidelines for emotional and spiritual well-being:

  1. Renewing of the Mind: Romans 12:2 speaks of transforming and renewing the mind to change our thoughts.
  2. Restoration of the Soul: In Psalm 23:3, it says the Lord "refreshes my soul", showing His divine care.
  3. Do Not Hide Problems: James 5:16 urges us to confess our sins and pray for each other to be healed.
  4. Rest in Christ: Matthew 11:28 is Jesus' open invitation: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

CONCLUSION

The disconnection from God, added to screen addiction, greed, and family deterioration, are destroying the world's mental health. But Christ remains the solution. Turn off the noise of the world, return to the source of life, and allow the Holy Spirit to restore your mind.
