Central Idea

Humanity is constantly seeking extraordinary miracles to alter difficult circumstances. A biblical miracle is a sovereign intervention of Almighty God where natural laws are paused or transcended to fulfill His eternal purpose. Yet in Nazareth, Christ 'could there do no mighty work' (Mark 6:5). This expository sermon explores what is required for a miracle: breaking human self-reliance, humbling oneself under divine authority (wayyikkana - 2 Chronicles 33:12), crying out for unmerited mercy like the leper and blind Bartimaeus, and understanding that the greatest miracle is not a temporary earthly solution, but the eternal salvation of the soul.

EXPOSITORY INTRODUCTION

  • The human longing for the miraculous: Mankind continually searches for supernatural intervention when human limits are reached.
  • Biblical definition: A miracle is an extraordinary sovereign act of God manifesting His power and fulfilling His eternal purpose; only He has authority to suspend natural laws.
  • The mystery of Joshua (Joshua 10:12-14): Prayed for the sun and moon to stand still; science notes astronomical anomalies (23h 20m of missing time plus 40m in Hezekiah's sundial). A miracle has no human explanation: only God does wonders.
  • Transition Question: Does God still perform miracles today? What does He require of our hearts?

1. Humbling Ourselves Under Divine Authority (Mark 6:5)

  • The voluntary limitation in Nazareth: Jesus "could there do no mighty work", save laying hands on a few sick. Not due to a lack of power, but because of the people's heart condition.
  • The impediment of familiarity: They knew His humble family and His carpenter trade (Matthew 13:53-58).
  • Admiration without submission: They admired His wisdom in the synagogue, yet refused to bow to His authority.
  • The barrier of pride: Seeking the benefit of healing while rejecting Christ's Lordship shuts down the supernatural.

2. The Biblical Anatomy of Humility: Wayyikkana (James 4:8-10; 2 Chronicles 33:12)

  • The command of James 4:8-10: Draw near to God with clean hands, purified hearts, and mourning: "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up."
  • The repentance of Manasseh (2 Chronicles 33:12): Wicked king for 52 years who, chained in Babylon, threw down his crown and idols.
  • The Hebrew root Wayyikkana (וַיִּכָּנַע): To cast off arrogance, shatter self-reliance, and bend the neck before the Creator.
  • The New Testament Greek sense: Abandoning all human superiority and submitting unconditionally to sovereign grace.

3. The Leper's Posture: Surrender to Sovereign Will (Mark 1:40-42)

  • Physical and spiritual reverence: Came kneeling down and pleading with reverence.
  • Submission of will: "If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean." Did not demand rights or merit; appealed to Christ's sovereignty.
  • The compassionate response: Jesus stretched out His hand, touched him, and said: "I will; be thou clean."

4. Blind Bartimaeus: Crying for Unmerited Mercy (Mark 10:46-52)

  • Passionate cry: Hearing Jesus passed by Jericho, cried out: "Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me!"
  • Zero human shame: Overcame the crowd's rebuke and cast away his beggar's garment to run to the Master.
  • Theology of mercy: Pleading for mercy acknowledges that we bring no merit and depend entirely on divine grace.

5. Divine Sovereignty and Naaman's Radical Obedience (2 Kings 5:10-14)

  • God has no contractual debts: Believing in God does not obligate Him to human timelines; He moves according to His sovereignty.
  • Naaman's humility: The Syrian military commander had to descend from his pride and dip seven times in the muddy Jordan.
  • Hear and obey: Faith does not debate God's methods; it obeys His radical commands.

6. The Supreme Miracle: Eternal Salvation and Thanksgiving (Luke 17:11-19)

  • The trial of the ten lepers: Ten were cleansed on the road to the priests.
  • The ratio of gratitude: Only one—a despised Samaritan stranger—returned glorifying God with a loud voice.
  • Christ's confrontation: "Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?"
  • The final revelation: "Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole" (v. 19). The supernatural seeks not merely temporary physical relief, but the eternal redemption of the soul.

PULPIT CONCLUSION

  • The governing principle: Every miracle begins by abandoning human pride and submitting fully to the authority of Christ.
  • Four homiletical models:
    • Manasseh: Genuine repentance and brokenness.
    • Bartimaeus: Persistent, humble prayer overcoming human shame.
    • Naaman: Radical obedience defying intellectual pride.
    • The Samaritan: Reverent gratitude that receives eternal salvation.
  • Altar Call: Seek the Lord for who He is, bring your impossibilities, and rest in His sovereign will.

Quick Devotional

"Mark 6:5 — And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them."

The human heart often seeks Jesus for the thrill of signs and wonders, but stumbles when He demands surrender to His authority. In Nazareth, familiarity bred contempt. If you desire to see God's hand moving in your impossibility today, the very first step is to bow your heart. Do not approach God with entitlement. Come like the leper who fell on his knees saying: 'If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.' Rest in His sovereign goodness.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I humble myself before Your throne of grace. Cleanse me from all pride, presumption, and self-reliance. I surrender my circumstances into Your hands and pray that Your holy will be accomplished in my life. In Jesus' mighty name. Amen.
