🫒 Fresh Oil: The Spiritual Renewal You Need Every Day
Key Text: Psalm 92:10 — "But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil."
INTRODUCTION
Eastern culture is deeply rich in customs of treating one another and personal care, many of which are captured in biblical readings and applied by God to our spiritual lives. Biblical writers spoke from their own experiences and emotions, illustrating how God works in caring for the souls of those who seek Him.
Not everyone can understand this rich metaphorical way of speaking, just as the psalmist used; people sink into bitterness and depression, but worshippers understand what it means when the text says "You have exalted my horn like a wild ox" and "I have been anointed with fresh oil". But let's learn what it means, because being a Christian isn't just about showing up at church; it's about living your faith with passion and experiencing what others cannot.
Oil is a very necessary and indispensable element in human life. For us, vegetable oil is usually used for one thing: cooking. But in the biblical East, it was completely different. What did David mean by "fresh oil"?
1. OIL IN THE BIBLICAL EAST
It was very common to use olive oil in particular, an oil with many applications. It grew there as commonly as wheat or rice does elsewhere, being the best oil in the world for digestion and multiple purposes.
Main uses of olive oil:
- As food — The basis of Eastern cuisine
- As a cosmetic — It softened and protected the skin from the sun
- As medicine — Renowned healing properties
- As fuel — For lamps and lighting
- For ritual purposes — To consecrate and sanctify
This oil symbolized the idea of divine presence, purity, and joy in every home. It transitioned from something everyday to something profoundly sacred.
2. A SPECIAL OIL FOR ANOINTING
The anointing oil was designated by God as special to consecrate and sanctify those who were going to serve Him, demonstrating how holy they were to be.
"Moreover the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 'Also take for yourself quality spices—five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon... five hundred of cassia... and a hin of olive oil. And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer.'" — Exodus 30:22-25
The Hebrew word שֶׁמֶן (shemen) means:
- Oil — A physical substance
- Ointment — Perfumed oil for special use
- Fat — A reserve of energy and strength
- Perfume — A pleasant fragrance
- Fertile — A sign of abundance

"Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil." — 2 Kings 4:2
That oil in the widow's house saved her from losing her sons. The oil represented divine provision in the midst of scarcity.
3. THE METAPHOR OF THE WILD OX AND THE OIL
David wrote: "You have exalted my horn like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil." David understood that he had his own strength, but with God, his strength was far greater. The wild ox was a strong, nearly invincible animal.
What does the wild ox have to do with oil? Two revelations:
First: The wild ox has fat in its hump that gives it energy reserves to run, fight, or charge. When attacked, that fat made it difficult to capture. David, studying the wild ox, knew this—its incredible strength and inexhaustible energy.
Second: The horn of the wild ox was the vessel used to pour the oil and anoint kings, the chosen ones, the special ones.
"I have been anointed with fresh oil" — You are not just anybody. Those of us here are not just anybody. Here are the called, the chosen, the special people who need fresh oil every single day. The anointing is what differentiates the religious person from the true worshiper.
4. WHAT IS FRESH OIL?
This symbolism David declares speaks of an oil that had to be renewed every day:
"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over." — Psalm 23:5
In Hebrew, "fresh oil" relates to שֶׁמֶן יִצְהָר (shemen yitzhar):
- Freshly pressed oil — Not stored, not old
- From ripe olives — At their optimal point
- Pure, unmixed — Without contamination
- Of the highest quality — First press
For Israel, fresh oil was a sign of:
- ✔ Good harvest — God is working
- ✔ Divine blessing — Favor from heaven
- ✔ Prosperity of the covenant — Promises are being fulfilled
"And He will love you and bless you and multiply you; He will also bless... your grain and your new wine and your oil." — Deuteronomy 7:13
5. THE CUSTOM OF ANOINTING THE VISITOR
Oil was used to cover the heads of animals as special care against insect attacks. But among people, it was a sacred custom of hospitality:
"Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, 'Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet... You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.'" — Luke 7:44-46
It was a basic custom of hospitality: when a visitor arrived at your home, the host washed their feet (from the dust of the road), gave them clean clothes, and anointed their head with fragrant oil.
That anointing was a sign of honor, joy, and protection: the oil shone in the sun, smelled good, and softened dry skin. It was only done for respected guests; refusing to do so was a grave offense. Jesus used this in Luke 7:46 to correct Simon.
6. THE CHURCH NEEDS FRESH OIL
"You anoint my head with fresh oil"
The head is where your thoughts, decisions, actions, and will reside. You need the Spirit to think in the Spirit.
- Daily renewal, daily communion — No old oils
- Many need to understand that the house of God is a horn meant for anointing, but your renewal may be stagnant.
- The cell phone is a hindrance here — texting, talking — how can you leave with renewal and strength?
7. OIL AS A PROCESS OF PREPARATION: THE EXAMPLE OF ESTHER
In the story of Esther, we find the most detailed preparation process involving oil:
"Each young woman's turn came to go in to King Ahasuerus after she had completed twelve months' preparation, according to the regulations for the women, for thus were the days of their preparation apportioned: six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with perfumes and preparations for beautifying women." — Esther 2:12
The purification process:
- Six months with oil of myrrh — Deep cleansing, softening, perfuming the skin
- Six months with perfumes and cosmetics — Beautification and transformation
- Only then could they present themselves before the king
Spiritual meaning: The oil of myrrh worked as an ointment: it was rubbed in, massaged, or used in aromatic baths with a special, almost ritualistic sense of preparation. The prolonged use (an entire year) indicates that it was not a one-time symbolic act, but a complete process of transformation.
This symbolism speaks to what the church should be doing to present itself to its King: immersing itself in fresh oil for the encounter with Christ.
